For faith leaders and other supporters of adult survivors of child sexual abuse

February 2026, Higher Love #3 –

I know I’ve said this before but it should be repeated: God loves us for just one reason, and that’s because we are God’s treasured creation. I’m repeating it here because, as supporters of survivors, we must consistently remember that true love treasures people simply because they are God’s creation.  NOT for who they can be, and not for how useful they are.

Okay, obviously I’m human too and I recognize the temptation: It’s really easy to feel affection for someone who is very helpful or useful to us and to our churches. It’s easy to offer support to someone who tries to do what we think they should do to change. But affection and support do not indicate godly love.

If we hope to reach people with the anointing of the good news, with the power that helps to shatter oppression, we must seek to offer love that is based on the fact of their creation. And we can only do that with God’s help.

In other words, let’s focus on the Lord. Let’s seek to be open to God—be increasingly open to Divine love—instead of working to change people, or organizations, or systems. Then love will flow through us, and everyone around us will be affected by it.
