January 2026, Bearing Witness #2

We can start learning about bearing witness, or testifying, by simply looking around and noticing the good things that are going on. (NOTE: If you experience chronic depression, please consult your health care professional at once.)

I’m not talking about toxic positivity, or faking gratitude; we’re looking for truth here and you can’t find truth based in a lie. But I am talking about a balanced perception of reality. We can acknowledge the bad and the good, and not emphasize one at the expense of the other.

So I’m saying to start by bearing witness to yourself—talking to yourself—about the things that are good and beautiful. If you’re feeling frustrated in working with survivors, or anyone else, remind yourself about the things that are going right. Comment (to yourself) on the positive changes, no matter how small.

Give God glory for all progress; in your mind, and in your prayers, celebrate someone’s baby steps as well as their grand leaps.
