People are talking a lot about freedom, but what does it really mean? For people who seek to follow Christ, I think it means we are free to become all that we were created to be; freedom to grow and thrive, by God’s definition; freedom from the bonds of sin, shame, fear, death, and deceit; freedom to choose well and lovingly.
We’ll look at those concepts this month. For now, how do we get to be free? Jesus said freedom comes through knowing the truth (John 8:32). Please know that we survivors often learn the truth of our abuse slowly. It’s painful.
As supporters, you cannot rush this process of learning the truth, but you can encourage survivors by making sure they know you care about them and that you are ready to hear whatever they want to tell you…and that they don’t ever have to tell you anything as long as they gradually acknowledge the truth to themselves, and pray honestly about it.
Please contact me if you have questions or comments; I’m a survivor too (Mary.Brown@SilenceBrokenNow.org). Let’s move toward freedom in truth.
