It’s hard to celebrate when we feel disappointed. When we have unreasonable expectations for survivors’ progress, we will inevitably be disappointed. Every survivor is different and all survivors progress at their own rate.
Let’s honor survivors’ progress because of what we see from each person. Let’s acknowledge efforts and successes on an individual basis. For instance, “I know it’s been hard for you to ask for help, but I noticed that you did it! Good job!” Or, “I remember you said it’s an effort to get places on time, but you’ve been punctual all this week. Congratulations!”
Authentic celebration of progress includes remembering what people struggle with, observing their achievements, and then sincerely offering praise.
