An important lesson that we can learn from the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is that being aware of a problem does not solve it. In Jesus’ parable, the priest and the Levite both saw the wounded traveler on the road. They knew about his troubles but did nothing except move away from him.
In part, Silence Broken’s work is to increase awareness of the terrible problem of child sexual abuse—its pervasiveness, and its long-term impact on survivors. But that work is meaningless unless people make individual decisions to help individual people, instead of just going “Tsk-tsk-tsk, what a shame” and doing nothing.
Now that you’re aware, what will you do?
Start by earnestly, sincerely praying regularly for the survivors in your church and your family. (They are there, whether or not you know their names.) Keep it up. In due time, the Lord will show you what to do next. Please always feel free to email me with questions or coments: Mary.Brown@SilenceBrokenNow.org.
