For faith leaders and other supporters of adult survivors of child sexual abuse

March 2025, Week 4 – Pitfalls to Avoid

As we actively work to spiritually support survivors during this long game of healing, there are many things that we as faith leaders can do. Strive to be aware of the Spirit’s leading as you minister to survivors, because there are also things that we should not do, actions that can do more harm than good. Here are a few examples of what not to do:

Don’t give unsolicited advice.

Don’t tell a survivor about someone else who was also abused.

Never, ever tell anyone else what a survivor has told you in confidence.

If someone discloses to you, don’t question or pry. Don’t ask for details, and don’t ask whether the person is sure that what they are saying actually happened that way.

Never do something for a survivor, or give them something, and then tell them to keep it a secret. Even if your intentions are godly, abusers told children to keep terrible secrets that did great damage. Whatever assistance you give survivors should never be a secret. Of course you won’t publicize it but the survivor must be free to tell anyone.
