For faith leaders and other supporters of adult survivors of child sexual abuse

March 2025 Week 1: It’s a Long Game

I heard someone say that when we work on healing from childhood abuse, we’re “playing the long game.” I’m not familiar with that term so I looked it up; it means, basically, doing something that is a slow process which will bring success eventually.

So yes, our healing is indeed a long game. It sometimes looks like nothing is changing, or like a survivor has taken one step back for every two steps forward.

This is frustrating for supporters but it’s crucial to remember that you cannot hurry this process. Please be patient with us (pray and ask the good Lord to bless you with more patience, as often as necessary) because you can do much damage by pushing. You can destroy the trust that you worked so hard to build up.

So walk beside us. Pray for us and pray for yourself. Then believe that your prayers are being heard. God is working in the way and in the timing that is best for all concerned.
